Mighty Balls

I had seen them on Gramercy Tavern's lunch menu before. I just never thought I was woman enough to order one.

But, with a colleague urging me on, sitting in the Tavern Room on Friday afternoon, I screwed up my courage and ordered their rightly famous Stuffed Meatball. As you can see from the food porn image above, this was one righteous ball. It was shamelessly huge, sliced in half and unabashedly oozing aged fontina cheese. Making it even more enticing, it was perched atop delicate parsnip puree, a mound of sweet, irresistible onion marmalade and an intense red wine reduction.

And, I haven't yet described the meat itself -- a toothsome combination of pork, veal and beef that will make you forget all meatballs you've known before.

It is possible to truly fall in love at first sight? Or better yet, at first bite?

If so, I am a woman in love.

Bring on the balls!
